When it comes to training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), choosing the right academy is
crucial for both your safety and growth as a practitioner. While many academy foster a
positive and supportive environment, there are some red flags that can indicate a less-
than-ideal training atmosphere. Here are some warning signs to watch out for when
evaluating a BJJ academy.
Limited Class Structure
A well-structured class is essential for effective learning. If classes seem disorganized
or if instructors skip essential techniques without explanation, it may hinder your
progress. Look for gyms that provide clear lesson plans, drilling sessions, and ample
question and answer opportunities.
Disrespect Towards Students
Instructors should treat all students with respect, regardless of their skill level. If you
observe any form of disrespect, condescension, or favoritism, it could lead to a negative
training experience. An instructor who encourages and motivates students creates a
healthier learning environment.
Toxic Atmosphere
A gym should feel welcoming and supportive, not hostile or competitive in a negative
way. If you notice excessive ego, bullying, or unwelcoming behavior among students, it
could create a toxic environment. A good gym promotes camaraderie and respect, so
trust your instincts if something feels off.
Discouraging Cross-Training
A gym that forbids or discourages cross-training at other schools can be a significant
red flag. While loyalty to a gym is important, a healthy training environment encourages
students to explore different styles and learn from various instructors. Cross-training can
enhance your skills and deepen your understanding of martial arts, and a gym that
recognizes this will foster a more open and enriching experience. That means open
mats should be just that: open. Here at ACS, we encourage people to try other gyms.
We feel so confident that our organization provides some of the best training in Indiana,
we aren’t afraid to let people shop around.
Avoids competitions/ Too much competitive emphasis
While competitive success can be an important indicator of a jiu-jitsu gym’s
effectiveness, it shouldn’t be the sole criterion for evaluating its quality. A strong track
record in competitions demonstrates that the training regimen and techniques being
taught are effective; however, it’s essential to recognize that many practitioners are not
focused on competition. For these individuals, a good gym should prioritize a supportive
learning environment that fosters skill development and personal growth. An emphasis
on solid fundamentals, effective coaching, and a positive culture can provide confidence
to all students, ensuring they are learning techniques that are applicable both on and off
the mat. Conversely, a total lack of competitive opportunities may signal a deficiency in
the gym’s training quality or commitment to improvement, serving as a potential red flag.
Ultimately, the best gyms strike a balance between fostering competitive success and
nurturing a welcoming atmosphere for practitioners of all levels. At ACS, we try to make
sure we provide ample opportunities for those seeking to test themselves in
competition. But every member is important; we make sure we non-competitors are
treated with just as much respect as our competitors. Everyone has different goals. It’s
our job to help every member achieve what they seek to accomplish.
